What is Attachment Check?
Attachment Check is a free attachment style quiz for adults. It measures two things researchers use to describe adult attachment: anxiety (fear of rejection) and avoidance (discomfort with closeness).
Where you fall on those two scales places you in one of four styles: secure, anxious, avoidant or fearful-avoidant.
How to use the test
- Pick your vibe. The tone changes the jokes, never the result.
- Answer 8 questions about closeness and trust. Think about close relationships in general.
- Answer 8 about space and reassurance. Go with your gut, not how you wish you reacted.
- See your style on the map, then share it. It's more fun when a partner or friend takes it too.
What the questions look at
Anxiety
Fear of rejection and need for reassuranceAvoidance
Discomfort with closeness and depending on othersSecure
Low on both: comfortable with intimacy and independenceFearful-avoidant
High on both: wanting closeness and fearing itHow we score it
Each question feeds one of two scores, anxiety or avoidance, from 0 to 100%. Some statements count when you agree and some when you disagree. Scores of 50% or more count as high. Low on both is secure, high anxiety only is anxious, high avoidance only is avoidant, and high on both is fearful-avoidant.
The two-dimension model comes from adult attachment research, and the questions are original to this site. They have not been validated in a clinical study, so treat your result as a starting point for reflection.
Frequently asked questions
Can my attachment style change?
Yes. Research describes 'earned security': people becoming more secure through supportive relationships, therapy, and self-awareness.
What's the most common attachment style?
Secure. In the classic 1987 study by Hazan and Shaver, about 56% of adults described themselves as secure.
What is the anxious-avoidant trap?
It's a common pattern where an anxious partner pursues closeness and an avoidant partner pulls away, which makes each of them do more of the same.
Is fearful-avoidant the same as disorganized?
They're closely related. 'Disorganized' is the term used in research on children; 'fearful-avoidant' is used for adults.
Do you save my answers?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you answer is sent to us or anyone else.
